Journey Stories Resources
The Minnesota Humanities Center has developed additional resources in conjunction with Minnesota’s tour of Journey Stories, a Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibition. These resources provide a space for Absent Narratives—the stories of people in the community that are often overlooked—to engage all Minnesotans in a comprehensive statewide narrative. The video excerpts and reading guides can be used not only by Journey Stories host communities to expand and enhance their exhibit experience, but also by individuals, schools, and community groups who are unable to attend the exhibit but would like to learn more about their neighbors.
JOURNEY STORIES VIDEOS
With funding from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund the Humanities Center is partnering with the Council on Asian Pacific Minnesotans, the Council on Black Minnesotans, the Chicano Latino Affairs Council, and the Minnesota Indian Affairs Council to highlight and reaffirm that Minnesota has always been home to multiple and varied lived experiences, cultural traditions, and viewpoints. As you watch the “Journeys” video series, consider how the speakers’ stories are similar to and different from your own.
The books selected for this project each tell a journey story. Many of the books were created by authors and/or illustrators from Minnesota. The reading guides have been developed for use by librarians, teachers, child care providers, parents, and anyone else interested in reading with children. The guides contain questions that tie the story to the theme of travel and provide many suggestions for related activities for further exploration.
