Suggested Reading with Annotations by Clay Jenkinson
Edmund Morris, The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt.
This won the Pulitzer prize. It is the book that led me to take on the character of Roosevelt. It is one of the best biographies of our time.

Edmund Morris, Theodore Rex.
This volume about the Presidential years is also good, but not as compelling as his first volume.

Carlton Putnam, Theodore Roosevelt: The Formative Years.
Out of print but worth looking at in the library. It is the best account of Roosevelt's sojourn in the Dakota badlands, and it is insightful throughout.

Paul Russell Cutright, Theodore Roosevelt: The Making of a Conservationist.
The great book on this subject has not yet been written, but this is a very good overview by Cutright, who is the leading natural history writer about the Lewis and Clark expedition.

H. R. Brands, T. R.: The Last Romatic.
Excellent recent biography

Kathleen Dalton, Theodore Roosevelt: A Strenuous Life.
Very good, and with a welcome emphasis on Roosevelt and women.

Sarah Watts, Rough Rider in the white House: Theodore Roosevelt and the Politics of Desire.
An interesting look at the cult of manhood in Roosevelt. This book is rather hard on Roosevelt. Watts suggests that Roosevelt's sense of manhood was insecure, and that his pursuit of the strenuous life was compensatory.

William Henry Harbaugh, The Life and Times of Theodore Roosevelt.
This biography has been around for long time, but in many ways it is the best political study of Roosevelt.
