General EU Websites and Online Articles on Culture, Policy, Immigration, and Migration
(Some of the articles are in .pdf format and you will need Acrobat Reader to read them. It can be downloaded for free from the Adobe web site.)

European Union web site
The official EU web site describing its structure, purpose, and mission. Also includes current events and links to all EU institutions

The European Union: A Guide for Americans
Includes extensive EU information aimed at Americans, including "the basics," laws and policies, information about member countries, a section for young people, and updated news and speeches.

The European Policy Centre
Site includes latest EU policy news.

The European Convention
Constitution and other information available in many languages.

The Brookings Institute
The "Global Politics" link has a section on the European Union that includes a number of articles/papers about current EU issues.

Migration Information Source
The Migration Information Source provides data from numerous global organizations and governments, and global analysis of international migration and refugee trends. The Source offers news, migration data, and essential facts on the movement of people worldwide.

Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies
(from the former Center for European Migration and Ethnic Studies web site)
Includes article titles and abstracts, but you need a subscription to read full articles.

European Migration Information Network
Site's database will hold comprehensive detailed registers and directories containing metadata on information sources of all types and for all aspects of migration in Europe. The web-site is still "in-progress" but there is a survey to fill out so that you can have input in what it will contain.

European Migration Centre
Includes an interesting "Statistics" page, searchable by topic (migration flows, employment, and more) or by country. The "Topics" page has links to a number of articles in PDF format.

History of International Migration
Broken down into time periods, this site offers a very comprehensive look at the history of European migration from 1500 to present-day.

People Flow: Migration in Europe

Local citizenship and European citizenship are the twin pillars of a short-, medium- and longterm policy which applies not only to European towns and cities but also to regional, national and European authorities. This document describes a new European multicultural policy.

A thorough discussion of issues such as the euro, social policy, democracy and security, and includes areas that are often overlooked: cultural policy; language; policing; and the specific experience of small states.

Multicultural Europe: Illusion or Reality. Laszlo Felfoldi and Ildiko Sandor, Eds. BPR Publishers, 1999.
Eighteen essays first presented as lectures at the 1998 conference held in Budapest, are divided into two groups: topics on the theme of identity, and aspects of multi-cultural coexistence. Drawing on folklore and ethnographic traditions, the regions and peoples considered include Estonia, the Celts, the Votians, and Lithuania, but the majority of the papers consider issues within Hungary.

Nations and Nationalism. Ernest Gellner. Cornell University Press, 1994.
Gellner makes the following argument: industrialism demands a homogeneous High Culture; a homogeneous High Culture demands an educational system; an educational system demands a state which protects it; and the demand for such a state is nationalism.

Language, Nation, and State: Identity Politics in a Multilingual Age
. Tony Judt and Denis Lacorne, Eds. Palgrave Macmillan, 2004.
This book examines the role that language has played in forming modern European nations. The book explores the issues of monolingualism vs. plurilingualism within individual nations, the revival of languages in nations such as former soviet republics, and concludes with a look at language in the electronic age.

Mass Migrations in Europe: The Legacy and the Future. Russell King, Ed. John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 1995.
The first section deals with theoretical and policy topics such as economic restructuring, geographical change and public policy perspectives. The second section inspects the legacy of migration along with issues posed by return migration, "guest-workers,'' multiculturality, political and electoral geography, second and third generation migrants.

This volume is grouped around four central questions raised by multiculturalism: is universalism ethnocentric?; does multiculturalism threaten citizenship?; do minorities require group rights?; and what can Europe learn from North America?.

The book discusses multiculturalism as the political outcome of ongoing power struggles and collective, negotiations of cultural, ethnic, and racial differences.

Idea of Europe: Problems of National and Transnational Identity. Brian Nelson, David Roberts & Walter Veit, Eds. Berg Publishers, Inc., 1992.

Aspects of European Cultural Diversity. Monica Shelley and Margaret Winck, Eds. Routledge, 1995.
The four essays included deal with language, education, the mass media and everyday culture. The issues under discussion are those that strongly influence the way in which Europeans define their common, everyday identity.

Building Europe: Cultural Politics of European Integration. Chris Shore. Routledge, 2000.
The author scrutinizes the process of European integration using the techniques of anthropology, and drawing on thought from across the social sciences.

European Politics Into the Twenty-first Century: Integration and Division. Hans Slomp. Greenwood Publishing Group, Incorporated, 2000.
The book demonstrates how European nations have attempted to cope with division within Europe and in international politics. Highlighting differences with U.S. politics, Slomp examines the European system from various perspectives, including geography, religion, economics, and social composition.

European Identities: Cultural Diversity and Integration in Europe Since 1700. Niels Arne Sorensen, Ed. Odense University Press, 1995.
General topics covered include: Supra-National Identities; Regions and Regionalisms; Language, Culture and Identity; Beyond the Nation-State?--with several different articles falling under each heading. The identities of various nations--from Scotland to Corsica--are considered.
