Family Literacy Initiatives: Reading Aloud

The Minnesota Humanities Center offers a research based general overview on best practices and engaging strategies for reading aloud to children. The interactive workshop targets child care providers, paraprofessional staff, bilingual staff, parents, volunteers and any other individuals interested in gaining basic knowledge about the impact of reading aloud to groups of children.

Workshop topics include:

  • Benefits of reading aloud
  • Reading and early brain development
  • Language and vocabulary development
  • Components of holistic literacy
  • Different types of books for reading aloud
  • Tips for reading aloud
  • Book/story related activities
  • Discussion questions with reading aloud

Tom Fitzpatrick, Director of Family Literacy Programs, conducts these workshops. Attendees will receive a variety of materials related to reading aloud, and will also have opportunities to view a diverse assortment of children's picture books and other resources.

Reading Aloud Workshops at the Minnesota Humanities Center

Reading Aloud workshops are scheduled occasionally throughout the year at the Minnesota Humanities Center. The registration fee for this two hour workshop is $25 per individual, and the next Reading Aloud workshop will be held on:

  • Tuesday, September 25, 2007 - 6 pm to 8 pm

Reading Aloud Workshops Throughout Minnesota

In addition, the Humanities Center is willing to contract with sponsoring organizations to conduct Reading Aloud workshops for their staff/volunteers anywhere in the state of Minnesota. These workshops can be individually designed based on any unique characteristics of the intended training audience and the children served by the sponsoring organization. The basic fee of $300 covers all training costs, including handouts, for up to 20 participants. The workshop can also be conducted for groups larger than 20 - but because of the larger size it becomes more of a presentation than an interactive workshop. For groups larger than 20, the cost is $15 per person.

The Humanities Center can also provide children's picture books and copies of the The Read-Aloud Handbook by Jim Trelease to training participants - but the sponsoring organization must be responsible for the total cost of books ordered.
