CENTER AWARDS GRANTS FOR INDIGENOUS LANGUAGE RESOURCES
ST. PAUL, Minn.
- March 19, 2008 - The Minnesota Humanities Center is pleased to
announce the recipients of six $5,000 grants to support the creation
of educational resources that support the efforts of indigenous
language programs in Minnesota. The grants were awarded to the following
Minnesota-based organizations:
- Eni-gikendaasoyang:
Center for Indigenous Knowledge and Language Revitalization at
the University of Minnesota-Duluth, for the development of 10
early reader books in Ojibwe geared toward learners with beginning
or low- to intermediate-language skills.
- Alliance
of Early Childhood Professionals, Minneapolis, for an illustrated
children's book about the life of Lillian Rice, a fluent Ojibwe
speaker/elder, written in both Ojibwe and Dakota languages.
- American
Indian Studies at St. Paul Public Schools for Ojibwe family language
learning kits, which include tools to increase retention and usage
of Ojibwe in the home.
- Bemidji State
University for the publication of volumes seven and eight of Oshkaabewis
Native Journal, an academic journal of the Ojibwe language.
- Niigaane
Ojibwe Immersion at Bugonaygeshig School in Bena for Ojibwemowin
Survival Phrases, an illustrated book of digital photos that are
labeled with essential vocabulary items in the picture and common
phrases that can be used in the environment.
- Dakota Language
Society in Minneapolis for Dakota Iapi ABC Iteowapi Wowapi, an
illustrated Dakota alphabet book.
The Minnesota
Humanities Center received funding from the National Endowment for
the Humanities to support this grant line. For additional information
