BROWN COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY MUSEUM TO HOST KEY INGREDIENTS

The Brown County Historical Society & Museum's will highlight Brown County restaurants, food festivals, food manufacturing industries, and ethnic influences while it hosts Key Ingredients: America by Food now through April 5.

An exhibition of the Smithsonian Institution's Museum on Main Street program, Key Ingredients explores how the foods we eat reflect our nation's rich immigrant experience, innovations in food preparation and preservation, the expanding availability of foods, and our changing tastes. The national exhibit's two-year, 12-site tour of Minnesota will conclude with its stay in New Ulm.

Exhibit location: Second floor exhibition gallery, Brown County Historical Society & Museum, 2 North Broadway, New Ulm, 507-233-2616. Hours: Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturday, 1 to 5 p.m.

February 12, 2008

  • “Key Ingredients – Singing in the Kitchen” school/public programs featuring Minnesota Folk singer/songwriter Charlie Maguire. Workshops at Washington Elementary School. Public concert in the Bessie Church Meeting Room, BCHS Transportation Annex - FREE, 7 p.m.

February 15, 2008

  • Key Ingredients Exhibit Opening Reception, 4:30-8:30 p.m. (Welcoming program at 6:30 p.m.) - FREE
    Featuring delicious desserts & a look at the exhibit – BCHS Museum.

February 19 (5 p.m.) & 21 (7 p.m.), 2008

  • Dining Etiquette classes for children (ages 10-14). Taught by Shannon McKeeth at the Bingham Hall Bed & Breakfast, 500 South German. Cooperative event with New Ulm Community Education – register through Comm. Ed (359- 8561) ($20)

February 23, 2008

  • Women’s History Luncheon, 12 noon, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Social Hall. Featuring Brown County food industry professional Mary Bartz. Tickets available at the BCHS, $10.

March 1, 2008

  • Historic Dinner. Featuring food historian & author Rae K. Eighmey & authentic foods from the past. Details TBA.

March 9, 2008 (tentative)

  • Cup & Saucer Tea. Bring your own special cup and saucer to this unique tea and share its story. Details TBA.

March 24, 2008

  • Children’s Popcorn & Movie Party, 1 p.m. – FREE. Cooperative event with the New Ulm Library. Bring own pillow or beanbag, watch a food-related movie & enjoy popcorn; fill out a food survey; tour the exhibit (if time allows).

April 4 & 5, 2008

  • BCHS Used Book Sale, Bessie Church Meeting Room, BCHS Transportation Annex. Special cookbook section.

Special features:

  • Cookbook Exchange/Sale Table in exhibit area;
  • Food Surveys in exhibit area (adults & kids);
  • Food Shelf donations box – Reduced admission with food shelf donation during March;
  • Free museum passes (if checked out at the New Ulm Public Library);
  • Apron collections on exhibit; and
  • Exhibit sections that feature Brown County restaurants, food festivals, food manufacturing industries and ethnic influences.
